Our Blog

Our first ever sketch challenge!!

We are so excited to be holding our first sketch challenge and with a great prize too!

As we both mentioned in our introductions, Fiona and I both love using sketchs and often use them as a jumping off point for our layouts. We use them as a guide to help the flow and design of our layouts. For those of you who are just getting into scrapbooking, they are a great way to give inspiration and ideas on placement instead of always just placing your photos in the centre. The best thing about them is that you can copy the sketch exactly if you are still unsure of yourself or just trying to make a quick layout to get your mojo going, or using it as inspiration... twist and turn it... flip it around start cutting and sticking and see the magic happen!

We have both used the sketch for our own layouts and you can see how the inspiration really varied between us. Thats the awesome part... everyone will always interpret the sketch different and it is so fun to see how everyones layouts turns out.

Introducing... Fiona Lally

Its a long weekend here as Hong Kong celebrates Buddha's birthday. We hope everyone is having a great one and that you are getting some crafting time in. We have something exciting up our sleeves to help inspire some long weekend crafting for you tomorrow so make sure you come back to check out what.

Today I wanted to continue our introductions and introduce you to my great friend and other half of the Mei Li team, Fiona.

Hi! My name is Fiona Lally.  I am the other co-owner of Mei Li Paperie.  I’m originally from New Zealand but for the past 5 years have been living in the exciting and vibrant city of Hong Kong with my family – my husband and two girls.  This is where we currently call home and everyday can be quite literally an adventure,  you just never know what you will come across.

I was first introduced to scrapbooking by a good friend (a fabulous card maker) when I was pregnant with my first child (8 years ago – goodness that’s gone quick!).  We attended a beginner’s scrapbooking class at our LSS in Wellington, NZ.  I came away thinking what a wonderful way to document life, as well as being able to express myself creatively.  While I was ‘finding my scrapbooking feet’ the amazing and talented Heidi Swapp came to NZ and I attended a couple of her classes.  This was really the moment when it all came together and I realised this is what I need to do to get our stories down  – past and present.  I’m not short of a few stories either ……both pre-children and with children.

For my memory keeping I do both Project Life and traditional scrapbooking with layouts, cards and mini albums (with a little bit of hybrid thrown in).  I love how they are all so different but all help me capture the stories.  Project Life is perfect for capturing my everyday, as I know that one day we’ll leave Hong Kong and I want to be able to remember our time here.  My layouts are mainly 12x12 either single or double but it really depends on the story that I want to tell.  I enjoy creating with a sketch as a kickstart for my inspiration.  I find that this helps me get those creative juices flowing and also helps with choosing photos – as I’m sure it’s not just me that has a rather large pile of photos!

Like Jen, one of the challenges I find as a scrapbooker in Asia is reasonable, easy access to the latest products, as well as having a selection to choose from.

This week is all about saying "hello" and introducing ourselves. Make sure you leave a comment to say "hello" and be entered to win a $50HKD gift certificate to our shop. Also, make sure you stop by yesterday's post and leave a comment to increase your chances and possibly win them both.. $100HKD can get your some fun things!

Introducing... Jen Ritchie

Hey everyone!

As we mentioned before we promised to get this blog rolling. We have sat down, planned things out and we are excited to have lots of fun things coming up, including challenges, guest designers, product features and great giveaways!

Over the past few weeks you have seen sneak peeks of our work and glimpses into our lives on Facebook and Instagram (@mei_li_paperie), but we haven't fully introduced ourselves.  So without further ado, I want to start by introducing myself...

Hi! I am Jen Richie. I am the co-owner of Mei Li Paperie. I was born in Canada, but moved to Asia almost 10 years ago when my parents were re-located to Zhuhai China for work. For a while I backpacked around, taught English and lived the life. Soon I met my now hubby Luke, who is Australian, and after sometime at university in Beijing and a few moves around we finally settled in Hong Kong. We live here in the country side with our mongrel pup, Scoutie.

I have been creative all my life, and grew up dreaming of becoming an interior designer or a Disney animator. Neither of those happened, but creativity is still a major part of my daily life. I started scrapbooking 4 years ago when I joined a class. I had been collecting, hoarding and carrying supplies all over the world with me for much longer than that, but I just didn't know how to start. The moment I finished my first page I was hooked. My style is very heavily influenced by colour and design. I always have a colour palette and sketch in my head while working. I love working in monochromatic and also a 2 colour-multi-tone style.

As a scrapbooker in Asia, I find getting the materials and supplies I want to be the biggest challenge. The best thing is that the culture here is so vivid that I can't help but take photos everyday. I don't think I will ever run out of stories to tell and document. You can find out more about me by following here or on my personal blog.

We would love for you to introduce yourselves too! Say hello below and have a chance to win $50 HKD to spend in our shop.

New spaces and faces...

Woah.. where did the time go! Sorry about neglecting this blog.. we feel horrible and it wont happen again. We are working hard to make Mei Li a success and I guess we need to work harder on balancing things in order to get this blog running as well. It all takes time a guess.

So without further ado, we want to talk about an awesome new space just opened here in Hong Kong called The Crafties. The space is just amazing! Decorated in our fav industrial vintage style, the space exudes inspiration from every single nook and cranny. It is evident that they have given great thought into how people progress through the creative process, from providing huge comfy sofa space complete with an inspiration library, to huge table workspaces, access to all kinds of great tools and of course a coffee bar!  Its really set up for you to get crafty. Not only that, but there is retail space as well. Shop around and buy some great handmade products made by fellow crafters or buy supplies to help you make your creations. They really cover all avenues of crafting having a selection of products from knitting, crochet, beading, sewing, jewellery making and of course scrapbooking! Which is where we come in!!

We are excited to have been offered some retail space here and have a selection of products on sale. We also have some fab workshops scheduled to run starting next week. You can check out all our classes we have over on our classes page or over on The Crafties classes page. Hurray up and register space is limited! In the mean time head on over to The Crafties, get creative, have a shop around and check it out! We hope to see you all soon joining in our workshops there!

Quick & Easy Storage...

Hi, Mei Li Paperie fans! Eunyoung here, today with my favorite storage methods and how keeping them simple helps me create quick and easy layouts~

What's your favorite storage method? I've love using plastic moving baskets and clear plastic containers...

That way my storage method is focused on 'easy & quick ' for using.

Each moving basket is for ink, dies, clear stamp and so on.

If I need a inkspray , I 'll just pull the moving basket which contains it over to my work area. That's all. : )

And all the little things (buttons, paperclips, chipshapes, wood veneers, brads and more) are kept in clear plastic containers. All within reach of my creative workspace, easy to see and ready to grab.

Keeping my storage "quick & easy" helps my creativity flow better and my layouts come out in little time. Here is a "quick and easy" layout I just finished up, I even made it about my storage.. he he.

July Colour Challenge

Hello~ Mei Li Paperie fans..... Eunyoung here with the July colour challenge ~

I picked white & black as the main colors. (white is my favorite color!)

I found each color gave me some feelings.... white  -> beautiful ,  black -> elegant & chic and the others -> sunshine & small petals

this colour pallette also made me imagine a scene that a ballerina was taking a rest.  : )

My layout 'be you' is a result by my this.

(this photo is one i took of my friend. she's not a ballerina, but she loves dance!!!!)
